He was born in 1946 in Ponta Delgada, Azores. He taught at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Porto and received several awards throughout his career. In 1976, he founded the Puzzle Group with other renowned artists. He took part in more than 300 group exhibitions in Portugal and abroad, and held several solo exhibitions. He is represented in various public and private collections, including Azorean institutions. He has been featured in galleries such as Zen, JN, 111, Módulo and Diagonale (Paris). Anthological exhibitions of his work were organised in 1991/92 and 2003/2005. His painting is marked by fantasy, humour and criticism. Among the awards he has received are the George Orwell Honourable Mention (1984), the National Painting Prize (1996) and the Art Car BMW Bavaria Prize (1997). In 2006, he was honoured with the rank of Grand Officer of the Order of Merit by the President of the Republic.
