‘As long as I've known myself, I've always had an enormous fascination with the world of fantasy’ - words that accurately illustrate the work of this artist from São Miguel, who invites us to look at the world through different eyes, proposing alternatives to a reality saturated with certainties.
This fascination is revealed in every inch of his artistic production: figures that insinuate themselves while others allow themselves to be guessed at, spaces that defy gravity, colours that don't ask permission to exist. Carlos Carreiro alters, dismantles and subverts images like someone who dismantles an old toy - without a plan, without logic, but with an almost playful instinct for reconstruction.
In a language that crosses surrealism and narrative figuration, ‘Colour and Fantasy: A Guide to Utopia’ presents itself as a journey of revelations. Each work is a door ajar, an invitation to surprise, a promise of lightness. There is an exuberant vitality that runs through these compositions - sometimes chaotic, sometimes perfectly harmonious - and transports us to inner landscapes where anything is possible: shapes that transform, spaces that float, figures that exist in a time without time.

About the artist

Carlos Carreiro was born in Ponta Delgada, Azores, in 1946.
He is a retired associate professor at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Porto.
In 1976 he formed the group Puzzle with Graça Morais, Jaime Silva, Dário Alves, Albuquerque Mendes, Fernando Pinto Coelho, Pedro Rocha, João Dixo and Armando Azevedo.
Throughout his career he has held 75 solo exhibitions and more than 300 group exhibitions in Portugal and abroad
He has received 15 painting prizes and honourable mentions, including the acquisition prize at the 1st Banco do Fomento Nacional Art Exhibition; the Verbo Postal Painting Prize; the attendance prize at the exhibition "o futuro é já hoje? At the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation's C.A.M.; National Painting Prize at the 2nd AIP Plastic Arts Biennial; BMW - Art Car Prize, Vila Nova de Cerveira Biennial. Artist honoured by the 5th Vila Nova de Gaia International Art Biennial
Em 10 de Junho de 2006 foi-lhe atribuída a Condecoração de Grande Oficial da Ordem de Mérito, pelo Senhor Presidente da República, Dr. Aníbal Cavaco Silva
